It was a distinctly odd start to the evening as I fought my way through crowds on the last day of the year towards the Hogmanay’s Media Centre in the Assembly Hall. As this building is part of Edinburgh University’s theological college their gothic courtyard is dominated by a statue of John Knox. Not a man noted for his mirth or encouragement of fun. I can imagine that the great man was birling in his grave over the night of the 31st and 1st (which is currently under a car park!). It is of course his most effective opposition to the celebration of Christmas which has made New Year aka Hogmanay such an important holiday celebration in Scotland.
Adding insult to injury, just yards from the great man’s statue was Hot Dub Time Machine with a large crowd at 8.45pm already as they say here giving it laldy.
Luckily as part of the #blogmanay team a group of us were ushered down the safety lane on the Mound. Our kindly sherpa stopped so we could pop along to one of the particularly fine tunes before we scurried towards Princes St.
Our official Sherpa a blur in neon orange as she danced along side us to We Will Rock You!
Um someone bought a very large teddy to the party…
